Seal Week

This year Exploris will be organising an exciting week of events, beginning on the 27th December and running to the 4th January.  Entitled 'Seal Week', the aquarium is planning extra activities such as seal talks, children's activities and, as always, the popular touch tank experience.

During the week, artist Lorna Hamilton will be taking a children's art workshop.   Lorna, a wildlife artist from Saintfield, exhibits her work across the UK and America.  Lorna, a member of the prestigious worldwide Artists for Conservation Foundation said, “It is important for children to learn about the creatures around them and through art they can have a connection with the animal. At an early stage children can appreciate and enjoy nature, if they get excited at this stage most likely they will see the importance of conservation in later life.”

Lorna's painting which features two Golden Eagles was chosen from over 300 paintings for the Artists for Conservation Exhibition in New York. Her painting hung alongside those of world renowned wildlife artists such as Robert Bateman and Pip McGarry. During this special week at Exploris, Lorna will have some of her paintings on show and there will be an opportunity to view the Artists for Conservation companion book which features Lorna's painting on the front cover.

Lorna is excited to be involved with Exploris Seal Week. She visited a number of weeks ago to photograph the young seals for a future painting. She said, “There are a number of rescued seals pups which can be viewed at the underwater viewing area and seal nursery. There are lots to see, it is an ideal way to escape from the house after the Christmas activities.”

Seal Week runs from 27th December to the 4th January; doors open at 10am closing at 5pm. Lorna will be present all day on Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th, there is no need to book just bring the kids along for a lot of fun. For more information contact Exploris - Tel: 028 4272 8062.
